Whats up this week.
|
February 12, 2012
Its official, the date is now finalised March 24th – 7 hour XC mountain bike race @ 7 Mile- Entries wll open this week! As soon as they open we’ll send out an email to the mailing list and post it on the website. Not on the mailing list? sign up here and we’ll send out a special email as soon as entries open. Proving vastly popular in 2010 and 2011 this multi lap individual or team XC race with the pits on the lake front is always a great day. Bringing in locals and riders from all over the country the riding is impressive and the vibe is great! Guess what, killer music and BBQ provided by QMTBC as well (we’ll be even better at it by now!)

Trees down on Fernhill Loop
The QMTBC had a meeting with the council last week about the Fernhill Loop track and the council confirmed that they are taking the track over from DoC. On the Fernhill side the broom has taken over and those native trees have blocked the trail in-between the two clearings. QLDC are going to temporarily ‘close’ the Fernhill end of the trail as they do not have the funds to clear it. This means that it will remain as it is and just won’t have any signage or maintenance.
If and when maintenance funding becomes available the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club will work with QLDC to make sure the trail is made as good as it can be. We want to keep the beech forest singletrack as it is (no diggers!) and would love to re-route the Fernhill side to make it an epic loop! If anyone out there is interested in sponsoring the work required please get in touch with the QMTBC .

We received some fantastic news from Andy Mcdonald the other week. Andy lives in Te Anau where there is currently not much legal singletrack to ride but there are hundreds of km’s of prime beech forest singletrack…to walk…including the epic Kelper Track which is a 60km loop from the shores of Lake Te Anau through beech forest and over spectacular alpine passes.
Apparently most of the Kepler Track would make a superb ride but some sections across the tops and one stair section would be unridable. Andy has been working with the local DoC and the idea of a new trail connecting the start and finish of the Kepler to make a 30km beech forest singetrack loop was born. DoC are into it, however the only problem is that it is in National Park meaning no mountain bikes….
DoC are keen to get the plan changed but they need to know that the MTB community are behind it to get it moving on a little quicker.
How you can help?
Show that you support the opportunity to have real mountain biking in the Fiordland National Park. Either by:
- Commenting on this article saying why it would be great
- Email Andy at

with a letter of support

- All of the above!

The Queenstown Bike Festival this year is hosting the Super D in the Queenstown Bike Park again. Six hours of gondola assisted racing – how can you resist? Entries are limited so get in there now! Last years race was totally smashing, the berms were smashed by the DH guys, the up-hills were smashed by the XC guys and the odd body was smashed by some trees -oops! So jump on over to the Super D website and get in before it’s too late!
