A brief background for those that don't know:

Each year the UCI holds two major international competitions:
1: The World Champs - a one off, multi day event covering Downhill, Four Cross, Trials, Cross Country, Marathon and maybe some others - of course, this event was held in Rotorua last year, and this year will be held in Fort William, Scotland.
2: The World Cup - a series of races usually with four cross and downhill together and sometimes cross country in the same venue as well. The world cup is the largest international event in the sport, with every top rider seeing a podium placing as the ultimate achievement. Events generally attract well over 200 riders from around the globe and thousands of spectators.

The World Cup generally covers 6 rounds across the globe, however this year after last minute access problems with the round that was to be held in Angel Fire, New Mexico, USA there are only 5 downhill rounds. Being a points based system, this means that even more is at stake for the riders, with just one bad result making it even harder to stay high in the rankings.
Each downhill event in the world cup covers 3-5 Days, depending on the local organiser's allowances for practice etc... On race day there are two runs: a Semi Final and a Final (the semi final being basically a qualifying run). The semi final runs through the entire start list from the highest ranked rider to the lowest. Only the top 80 finishers from the first round go through to the Final which is then run in reverse order from the slowest to the fastest, with the top seeded rider from the semi-final being the last to come down the hill.

The 2007 World cup:

Vigo, Spain

Matti Lehikoinen takes out the men's event, but Sam Hill, the fastest qualifier holds on for an amazing 3rd place in dismal conditions. Marielle Saner of Switzerland comes through for a beautiful win on home soil!

SCHLADMING WITH STEVE PEAT AND NATHAN RENNIE
The Schladming race from the Santa Cruz Syndicate team.

Schladming is an old favorite for many riders, being the host to several major events over the past few years. The locals here just absolutely love downhillers and they sure know how to put on an event. The downhill track is pretty long and tough, mixing in fast, flowy sections across gravelly dirt and steep, technical sections over slippery off camber tree roots. The track will be largely unchanged from previous years, but will feature a few new sections, just to keep the riders thinking. The 4X track, however, will see a complete new bottom half this year - see the preview article below:

THE SCHLADMING DOWNHILL COURSE:
Length: 2km
Starting Altitude: 1230m
Vertical Drop: 749m
